Ingres: "Drawing is a matter of decency - a matter of honour!"
My sketchbooks are a surrogate memory, a proving ground, witness to a compulsion to draw. I use them as a boxer uses the gym: regaining and retaining visual fitness, ironing out problems, acquiring technique, testing myself, honing skills, developing styles, trying to escape from the prison of style.
I take them everywhere: liferooms, waiting rooms, bars, cafes, trains and boats and planes...across continents, trying to erase the distinction between painting and drawing...in cities, forests and fields, trying to find and then break out of the comfort zones of media, line, rendering, form, mass, light, shade and habit.
